Money makes the world go 'round...

Ok, so I'm not exactly a worshiper of money, but given my general not-so-good financial condition, I'm always thrilled when I get more of it than expected. I suspect most of you know already, but for those who don't...I got a part time job as a paid section leader for the St. Olaf's church seasonal choir in downtown Minneapolis. I got all my paperwork taken care of and my first paycheck came last weekend. I figured...maybe $150, $200 max for what I've done so far (about 6 rehersals and 3 Sundays, 2 services each). That was enough to cover the rest of my rent, foodstuffs, some gas for the week plus a tank to get me home Christmas eve. Well, I cracked open the envelope and my jaw about hit the floor--$400. Not only can I take care of all the aforementioned, I splurged on myself a bit /and/ I can buy some people presents for the holidays this year! Yay!

First things first, I invested in a webcam. Perhaps not the best (colors are a bit off--though I'll be a lot of that is crappy lighting). I also invested in a few new games (King of Fighters Evolution for DC and Wild Arms 2 for PSX--$10 each!). Then, to wrap it all up I got myself a set of headphones--much nicer than these really bad speakers that Steve has for the comp. Hmm...I hadn't even considered it, but I could actually afford a DDR import for myself now, too. Hmm...

Anywho, time to sleepy. I have two "finals" tomorrow. One is playing a bit of piano for the class piano TA (that should be easy) and the other is juries. Not too difficult, but still stressful. Wish me luck! (please) :-)

Apparently I was more nervous than I thought. I didn't sleep too well last night. I woke up after four hours, tried drifting off again, but was fully awake again within the hour. I guess five will suffice. That's not so bad as the fact that I woke up with a slightly messed up voice--junk in the throat, a little sore--just stuff that is could make my jury really suck. I guess I best start warming up now...juries are 3 1/2 hours away. Oh, yeah, and piano. I hope this goes well...

And I...I will survive!

Yay! Juries went rather for me, amazingly. I was going to open with one of my english pieces but, since one of my italian songs not so great shape, my accompanist recommended I start with my other italian piece. That way it was less likely the professors would ask me to do my other one.

So, here's the rundown. I start with my better italian piece (Lascia ch'io pianga). Second they have me do my one german song (Der Leierman). I was expecting that and I both like that song and know it well, so that was cool. I did make a little boo-boo--at the end of each of the two verses, the last line repeats with a different melody each time. Well, on the first verse I skipped straight to the second one. Oops... Forunately, Yen-I and I both knew immediately what I'd done and we were able to keep going as if it had never happened. *phew* Thirdly, they picked my favorite english piece (The Roadside Fire). Actually, that was the one I was going to start with, but ended up not because of Yen-I's suggestion. So, 'twas a far cry from perfection, but I was definitely satisfied with my performance.

My throat is still bugging me, and I have a sneaking suspicion I might be coming down with something, but at least I made it through juries before it seriously messed up my voice. 'Course, I still have St. Olaf's and Christmas Eve...but...I also have a week to get healthy. :-)
